This part of town is apparently called the Gruthun. In all the
years I lived there, I never heard the word uttered - and I can't find out what
it means either. It has been suggested that it might actually be "Grythun", and
also that it might be named after a pub "The Griffin" which might have been
located nearby at some stage. I do remember gathering around the War Memorial
every Remembrance Day, freezing cold in my Scout uniform shorts, listening to
the Last Post being played and wondering if the bugler would reach the high
notes. |
